Sydney’s Biggest Residential Development Gets Underway

The first development in Sydney’s Growth Centres kicked off today, with major civil works beginning at Oran Park.

Minister for Planning, Kristina Keneally, said the Oran Park development will help the NSW Government respond to the future housing needs of Sydney.

Oran Park is the biggest residential development we have seen in Sydneyfor the last 10 years. The Precinct will be the new regional centre for Sydney’s South West,” Ms Keneally said.

The Precinct will include around 7,500 homes, a seniors living village and aged care facility for up to 400 residents, and a 30-hectare Town Centre.

Up to 25,000 people will live in Oran Park and with five schools and 18 hectares of employment land, many will be able to get a job or go to school locally. Work starts today to make that vision happen.
The $45 million of work on phase one of Oran Park includes upfront delivery of two school sites, a display home village, road infrastructure, playing fields, cycle paths, a seniors living precinct, and the first commercial building of the town centre. The first of 2,000 lots will be delivered from 2010.

Ms Keneally said Oran Park Town is an excellent example of how all levels of Government can work with the private sector to provide sustainable development and deliver on the Metropolitan Strategy.

This key milestone in the South West Growth Centre is being delivered as a result of a good working relationship between landowners, the NSW Government and Camden Council,” Ms Keneally said.

Oran Park Town, together with the Turner Road precinct, was rezoned in a record 16 months.

In this instance, gazettal of the rezoning occurred at the same time as the Development Control Plan and Council’s Section 94 Contributions Plan – which often follow a year or more down the track.

Oran Park Town will have the largest Display in South West Sydney, with 155 residential lots available to the market,” Ms Keneally said. There will be five education institutions adjacent to and within the Town Centre including a Catholic Primary school opening in 2011; a public K-12 school, two private K-12 schools and another public primary school scheduled for later in the project.

Homes will have the latest in energy efficient design, including recycled water systems and energy smart building materials. They will be fitted with high speed fibre optic cable to allow people to live and work from home. I would like to thank Landcom, the Growth Centres Commission, the local council and the land owners for working so effectively to get the concrete pouring on this project.”

The 1,119 hectare Oran Park precinct will include:
- Up to 7,500 new homes for nearly 25,000 new residents
- Capacity for 4,120 jobs
- Around 18 hectares of employment land 50,000 square metres of retail floor space town centre and two smaller neighbourhood centre
- 36 kilometres of walking and cycling paths; andMore than 10 per cent (148 hectares) of open space
